Plain Language Communication and Instructional Design
As a trailblazer and national leader in the health literacy field, Jann works tirelessly to close the health equity gap. In January of 2020, she celebrated her 25th year as the president of The Keenan Group, Inc., a firm focusing on clear and effective health communication. She is is a strategic partner for the Institute for Healthcare Advancement and is a founding member of the Clear Language Group consortium.
A featured presenter, Jann offers lively workshops, webinars and keynote presentations throughout the United States. She writes and designs award-winning health curricula, websites, videos, and booklets for government agencies, universities, pharmaceuticals, hospitals, corporations, and non-profit organizations. She has developed over 400 evidence-based plain language print and multimedia pieces. She co-designed the SHARE APPROACH curricula and trained over 700 clinicians to be master trainers on shared decision making.
Jann creates and executes comprehensive health initiatives for The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality, Yale, Hopkins, Maryland and New York State Departments of Health, Area Health Education Centers, Sanofi-Aventis, and Pfizer, among others. She was integral in developing the easy-to-read labeling currently used on all U.S. over-the-counter drug products today.
She is the author of peer-reviewed articles focusing on health behaviors and is co-author of You Can Quit Smoking! She received 9 Gold level awards from the National Institutes of Health and 3 Awards of Distinctions from the Center for Plain Language for plain language writing and design. Jann and her team received The Department of Health and Human Services Blue Pencil Award for a cardiovascular health initiative for Latinos.
Her home state of Maryland awarded her the Governor’s Award, the House of Delegates Award and the Black Legislative Caucus Citation for her leadership in promoting cultural competency and health literacy in Maryland. She received Indiana University’s School of Education Distinguished Alumni Award. She also was the recipient of Health Literacy Hero Awards from the Horowitz Center for Health Literacy and the Institute for Healthcare Advancement.
Jann believes in giving back and has served as an active member of national and local boards of directors and currently volunteers locally to to promote better health for underserved people.

Janet Ohene-Frempong, MS
Plain Language and Cross-Cultural Communications
Janet Ohene-Frempong (o-HEN-ee frem-PONG), is a plain language and cross-cultural communications consultant with over 25 years of experience in patient/provider communications. She has conducted workshops and provided consultation on plain language
and cross-cultural communications for a wide range of health information providers, including: health care systems, government agencies, health insurers, pharmaceutical companies, medical publishers, health and human service agencies and schools of medicine, nursing and allied health. She is often an invited speaker at national conferences.
Ms. Ohene-Frempong is co-author of Literacy, Health and the Law: An Exploration of the Law and the Plight of Marginal Readers within the Health Care System, a monograph for health system and pharmaceutical industry administrators. She is also co-author of Health Care for African Americans in Rethinking Ethnicity and Health Care, a discussion of the role of marginal literacy as one barrier to optimal care.
Ms. Ohene-Frempong has served on several national advisory committees and was a founding member of the Clear Language Group, a consortium of nationally recognized health literacy experts. In May of 2012, she was the fourth recipient of the IHA Health Literacy Hero Award, given by the Institute for Healthcare Advancement to recognize efforts in advancing the field of health literacy. In 2013, she was the second invited Blum Visiting Scholar, nominated annually by the Maxwell & Eleanor Blum Patient and Family Learning Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is currently a Strategic Partner with the Institute for Healthcare Advancement, a not-for-profit, private operating foundation providing health care and improving health literacy at the national level.
